Lombard names new fire chief
When Lombard's new fire chief and assistant chief assume their duties later this month, they'll strive for two goals: more community outreach and better cooperation with neighboring fire departments.
Mike Torrence was named the department's new chief on Tuesday and Jerry Howell the new assistant chief.
Torrence will assume his new duties Oct. 22 after being promoted from his post as battalion chief. He replaces former Chief George Seagraves, who retired suddenly this summer after 25 years.
Howell, who has been serving as fire marshal, will become assistant chief that same day.
Both men say the department needs to function more efficiently in tough economic conditions.
“Obviously with the economy the way it is now we've got to learn to do it better and cheaper, Torrence said. “With the current staff we have, I truly believe we can move forward.
Howell said the department needs to move away from its traditional rhetoric of honor, bravery and valor, and toward a focus on fire prevention and mitigation.
“We embrace the responsibility of knowing we continually need to look for innovative ways to provide services and creative ways to provide services, Howell said. “Reaching out and partnering with neighboring agencies in a greater way is one way.
Torrence said the Lombard Fire Department can share some vehicles with departments in Addison, Downers Grove and York Center and make sure the closest department is responding to calls.
“We're going to take a look at everything, and it's not that we're doing things poorly, Torrence said. “We need to change the current philosophy of the fire department, because we've always done things the same way.
With the new chief and assistant chief, Lombard Village Manager Dave Hulseberg said the department's philosophy will be one of two-way communication and using each employee's skills in the most efficient way, regardless of rank.
Lombard village officials also announced four other fire department promotions and the hiring of two new firefighter/paramedics.
They all will be sworn in at the Oct. 21 village board meeting.
