Garage damaged by fire in Batavia

A garage fire Tuesday afternoon in Batavia caused an estimated $25,000 in damage.

The Batavia Fire Department responded to the fire on the 500 block of Morton Street at 12:10 p.m. and reported finding a two car unattached garage ablaze, said Batallion Chief Randy Zies.

The fire was under control 10 minutes after crews arrived on the scene, Zies said.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but the garage was closed and locked at the time.

“We were able to knock it down real quick, Zies said. “The investigation didn't find anything suspicious.

Fire officials estimate the structure damage at $20,000 and damage to contents in the garage at $5,000. No cars were in the garage at the time of the fire.

“There was quite a bit of damage to it, but it's standing, Zies said.

Zies said that although the cause is undetermined, electricity cannot be ruled out.

There was no damage to the home or garage next door to the unit damaged, fire officials said.

Crews from North Aurora, Geneva, Elburn, St. Charles and West Chicago assisted the Batavia department.
