Not up for the marathon? Try the urbanathlon

You weren't up for the marathon?

Perhaps you'd rather climb over rows of Chicago taxis? Or race up and down three sections of steps in Soldier Field?

That's what more than 7,000 people will do this weekend in the Men's Health Urbanathlon Saturday, Oct. 16.

Unlike other urban-themed competitions in Chicago, such as the Urban Assault Ride (a bicycle obstacle course through the city) or the Runamuck (a 5K run and obstacle course in the mud), this race is geared more toward elite athletes and “weekend warriors.

Co-hosted by actor Mario Lopez, the race will go between Navy Pier and Grant Park with nine miles of running and six obstacle courses. The obstacles include climbing over monster tires, scaling an 8-foot-high wall, jumping over rows of Marine hurdles, and climbing across monkey bars.

“We try to really challenge people in a completely different way, said Jack Essig, Senior Vice President and Publishing Director of Men's Health.

That challenge intrigued Maria Tiirmaa, 27, of Woodridge, who decided to sign up for the first time this year. After years of running half-marathons, she's now practicing stair-climbing and has been building up her upper body strength with push-ups and pull-ups.

“I view it as a challenge, she said.

Proceeds from the race, which costs $150 to enter, will be donated to the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

“Triathlons are on the rise. People are looking to change it up, Essig said. “This is our fourth year in Chicago, and each year it sells out quicker.

There is no prize for winning, however.

“The prize is finishing in one piece and getting your medal, and celebrating afterward with good music at a great party in Grant Park, Essig said.

Registration closes at midnight Tuesday, Oct. 12. Go to www.menshealthurbanathlon.com/index.cfm for details.
