Scouting South Elgin at East Aurora
South Elgin (5-1, 3-1) at Aurora East (0-6, 0-3)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday at Roy E. Davis Field
Last meeting (2008): East Aurora 6, South Elgin 3
Last week: Bartlett 42, South Elgin 23; Lake Park 42, East Aurora 0
Outlook: East Aurora actually holds a 2-1 edge in this series. The Storm were on the bus to Aurora two seasons ago when coach Dale Schabert fell victim to a kidney stone attack and had to be taken to the hospital. The squads have not met since, and South Elgin has grown into a league heavyweight in the interim. The Storm hold talent advantages in virtually every category, and they welcome back linemen Andre York and Derek Hurschmann, both of whom missed last week's loss to Bartlett. However, several other players will see the field this week. "We're playing a bunch of guys in spots they might not be used to," South Elgin coach Dale Schabert said. "We've warned these kids you don't look by anybody and you must respect every opponent every week. You have to prepare the right way and play the right way or you'll get caught. We've been on them all week to make sure they understand the task at hand." The Storm can clinch a playoff berth with a victory, marking the first time in the program's brief history they've made the playoffs in consecutive seasons. "We've told the kids every year since I've become head coach that it's a race to 6 wins and you've got to hurry up and get there," Schabert added. "You don't want to wait until Week 9. Then we can get to work on trying to win the first Valley Division championship."
