S. Elgin man charged with endangerment, DUI
A South Elgin man has been charged with endangerment of a child and driving under the influence of alcohol after police arrested him driving his children while intoxicated on Friday, a police report said.
Brent A. Hackl, 38, of the 600 block of Waters Edge Drive, faces three counts of aggravated DUI and two counts of endangerment of a child after his arrest at 4 p.m. Friday, South Elgin Sgt. Mike Doty said.
Hackl was driving his silver Jeep in the area of Randall and Gire roads when an off-duty police officer from Marengo turned behind him and noticed him driving erratically, Doty said. The officer phoned 9-1-1, and followed Hackl until South Elgin police were able to stop him, Doty said.
Officers reported seeing two 3-year-old children in the back of the Jeep, as well as several open beer cans and wine bottles inside the vehicle.
Doty said Hackl was given field sobriety tests before taken to the police station, where he was charged.
Hackl's bail was set at $50,000 bond, meaning he needs to post $5,000 cash to get out. He is due back in court on Oct. 13, Doty said.
