Schaumburg, Conant advance to sectional
Schaumburg’s boys golf team continued its dramatic late-season turnaround Tuesday.
The Saxons had three golfers break 80 to shoot 326 and finish second by 5 shots to Lake Park in the Addison Trail Class 3A regional at Oak Meadows Golf Course.
“It’s fun, said first-year Schaumburg coach Chris Zickert, whose team took fifth in the Mid-Suburban League tournament. “We had a tough regular season but the kids finally started putting things together.
Conant took third with a 335 to advance to a sectional as a team for the first time in 20 years.
Schaumburg junior Nick Brandt shot a 6-over-par 77 to tie Lake Park’s Brian McKeown for second place behind medalist Jimmy Jaskoske of Addison Trail (76). Brandt was not one of his team’s top four scorers in the MSL tourney.
Senior Scott Meschnig shot 78 and junior Matt Kozlowski had 79 for the Saxons. Anthony Gualano shot 92 for their final counting score as they advanced to a sectional for the first time in five years.
“Nick, Scott and Matt have been playing really solid all year for us, Zickert said. “Brandt was looking for a little redemption from the conference meet. He was looking to put himself back up front and perform well.
Conant had some tense moments as it waited to see if it would advance to Monday’s Naperville Central sectional at Naperbrook Golf Course in Plainfield. Addison Trail finished a shot behind in fourth place.
“It was a good feeling and our kids are excited, said Conant coach Jerry Song. “I told them they can make history and they did.
