Aurora University to host Duke University religion professor Oct. 11
The Aurora University Wackerlin Center for Faith and Action will inaugurate a Chaplain's Forum lecture series on Monday, Oct. 11.
Seth Dowland, lecturing fellow and associate director of the Thompson Writing Program at
Duke University, will discuss "Peace with God, Peace through Strength: Billy Graham and the Battle over Nuclear Disarmament" at 4 p.m. in Perry Theatre at 1305 Kenilworth Place in Aurora. After his presentation, he will take audience questions.
The public is invited. Admission is free. To RSVP, call (630)-844-6864 or e-mail CFA@aurora.edu.
Dowland teaches seminars on American religions, religious theory, and religion and politics. Additionally, he is among 25 interdisciplinary faculty members who teach in Duke's required freshmen writing course.
His book, “Family Values: Gender, Authority, and the Rise of the Christian Right,” is under contract with the University of Pennsylvania Press. The book traces the history of the religious right in the last third of the 20th century and examines the rise of family values in conservative evangelicalism and the Republican party.
His undergraduate history thesis at the University of Virginia — an examination of Jerry Falwell — inspired him to study and teach about religion in America. He holds a Ph.D. from Duke in 2007 and received a master's degree from the University of Virginia.
The Chaplain's Forum continues on Nov. 11 at 3:30 p.m. when Magda Brown, a Holocaust survivor, will speak in the University Banquet Hall in Alumni Hall at 1410 Marseillaise Place in Aurora.
