Fatal crash closes Plank Road in Plato Twp.
An Elgin woman died after her car rear-ended an SUV Monday morning in Plato Township, according to police.
Gail O'Connor, 57, of the 100 block of Jane Drive, Elgin, was pronounced dead at Provena St. Joseph Hospital.
Authorities said the crash occurred behind a school bus that had stopped to pick up children on Plank Road.
The school bus was never hit and no children were injured, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff's Office.
But Plank Road between Switzer and Muirhead roads remained closed until noon.
Moreover, police are hoping to interview the school bus driver who they say drove away from the scene of the accident.
"It's possible the bus driver didn't even know anything happened back there," said Lt. Pat Gengler, a spokesman Kane County Sheriff's Office.
Police say the school bus had been picking up kids on eastbound Plank Road, west of Switzer Road, when a 2004 GMC, driven by Julie Kellenberger, 46, stopped behind the bus.
But O'Connor's 1995 Hyundai, also heading east, didn't stop and rear-ended the GMC, police said.
Both women were wearing seat belts and the air bags deployed in the Hyundai, Gengler said.
Both women were also alone in their respective vehicles, police said.
Kellenberger was treated for minor injuries on the scene and released, authorities said.
Meanwhile, Kane County Sheriff's detectives continue to investigate the accident and have yet to issue any citations.
