Cemetery Walk teaches about St. Charles history
Take a walk through time with the St. Charles Heritage Center's 20th annual Grave Reminders Cemetery Walk on Saturday, Oct. 9.
Stop by the North Cemetery, located on Route 25 next to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and learn about some of the interesting characters from St. Charles' past as you visit their final resting places.
Docents will guide you from grave to grave as you listen to the life stories of well-known St. Charles residents including Lina Paschal, owner and editor of the St. Charles Chronicle; Stevens S. Jones, early settler and man credited with naming St. Charles; and Alice Berg Johnson, Titanic survivor.
Tours will be given on a continuous loop from 1 to 3 p.m. Tickets are $3, children under 5 and members of the Heritage Center are admitted free.
This year's performance of Grave Reminders is dedicated to the memory of Jack Brens. For years, he organized this annual event and worked to write scripts, recruit actors, and even played a number or roles himself over the years. In addition to his work with Grave Reminders, Brens was a dedicated member of the Heritage Center's board of directors for many years and served as president of the board in 2009.
The St. Charles Heritage Center operates the St. Charles History Museum and Gift Shop located at 215 E. Main Street.
