St. Paul Lutheran volunteers make mission trip to Honduras

St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurora recently sponsored a nine-day mission trip to Honduras.

San Pedro Sula is the second largest city in Honduras with a population of over one million people and a brimming industrial center. Just an hour away is Siguetepeque, the most poverty stricken village in the country and where the church members, joined by other volunteers from around the Fox Valley, spent their "vacation." Of the 26 people that went, 13 focused their attention on medical care for the villagers while the other 13 spent their time building a home out of cinder blocks and mortar. Doug Overstreet of Overstreet Builders in Yorkville helped the group to create a sustainable home for an appreciative family. Hundreds of people also lined up for medical care outside of the makeshift medical facility led by pediatrician Dr. Louis Bolanos of Aurora. These villagers have no other means of medical care and are fortunate if they have one pair of clothes or one meal a day. This ever-changing group of volunteers, through the sponsorship of St. Paul's and local San Pedro Sula churches, has been providing assistance for this small village and others since 1999.
