Westerkamps, Montini wallop Marian Central
Montini and coach Chris Andriano came into Friday's matchup against Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division rival Marian Central in search of an identity.
The Broncos started the season 0-2 but then rattled off three consecutive victories.
Marian Central offered a true test, and let's just say Andriano and the Broncos liked what they saw.
Senior quarterback Matt Westerkamp ran for 3 touchdowns and threw for 2 more leading Montini (4-2, 2-0) to a convincing 35-6 victory over Marian Central at George Harding Field in Woodstock.
"I really think we played a solid great game overall," Andriano said of the Broncos' victory. "From beginning to end; offense, defense, special teams, everything. We made some plays tonight that make us feel pretty good."
Westerkamp looks completely healed after dislocating his right shoulder in the opening game. The 6-foot-2 senior quarterback completed 25 of 31 passes for 282 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Westerkamp had touchdown runs of 1, 2, and 8 yards to lead the Broncos attack.
"It feels 100 percent," Westerkamp said of his injury. "I think we executed very well and our defense came out to play."
Jordan Westerkamp had 12 catches for 189 yards and touchdown receptions of 13 yards and 50 yards in a spectacular game.
"Our coaches did just a great job of finding the open areas of the field and making the right call," said Jordan Westerkamp, who had 10 catches for 127 yards in the opening half. "Marian Cenral is a great program, but Matt just made some great throws."
The Broncos controlled the game from the start using an 11-play opening drive capped by Matt Westerkamp's 1-yard plunge to make it 7-0 with 6:56 remaining in the quarter.
Montini then took a 14-0 lead with 7:03 remaining in the half on a 2-yard run by Matt Westerkamp.
The Broncos defense limited Marian Central powerful running game to 39 total yards, with only 28 in the opening half.
With running game stalled the Hurricanes turned to their passing game as quarterback Ben Krol found Scott Stochl for a 12-yard touchdown to narrow the deficit to 14-6.
But Montini ended the first half with a Jordan Westerkamp 13-yard touchdown reception and began the second half with Matt Westerkamp's 8-yard scoring run to take a commanding 28-6 lead with 8:12 remaining in the third quarter.
The Westerkamp combination was too much for Marian Central to handle.
"I thought it was going to be a close game," said Marian Central coach Ed Brucker, "but it turned out the Westerkamps made some great plays. They have weapons in different places and they spread you out."
Matt Westerkamp found Jordan Westerkamp for a 50-yard score with 8:19 remaining to officially turn the game into a rout.
"I think we played a great game and we're getting better, that's the thing," Andriano added.
And the Broncos may have found their identity.
