Maple Park man denies drug conspiracy charges

A Maple Park man pleaded not guilty Friday to drug conspiracy charges stemming from a raid of his home in August.

Fernando Pilar-Lopez, 37, of the 2N block of Meredith Road, is facing charges of criminal drug conspiracy, money laundering and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver in Kane County.

Prosecutors say Pilar-Lopez came under investigation in mid-July after DEA agents in Phoenix intercepted a DeKalb-bound postal package containing 900 grams of heroin. A subsequent search of his home turned up more than $1 million in cash and 2,800 grams of cocaine, authorities said.

Pilar-Lopez was indicted by a grand jury Tuesday. Also indicted was Dennis Campbell, 32, of Chicago, who is accused of laundering more than $500,000 in the scheme.

Defense attorney Liam Dixon, who is representing Pilar-Lopez, did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment Friday.

Pilar-Lopez is being held in the Kane County jail on $15 million bail. Should he post the necessary $1.5 million cash bond to go free while his case is pending, he must reveal the source of his income, according to a bond condition set by a judge.

Authorities said Campbell was being held without bond in the Cook County jail on unrelated drug conspiracy and money laundering charges.
