Geneva man dies in Batavia parking-lot crash

A Geneva man died after his car went underneath a semitrailer Wednesday night in the parking lot of the Walmart in Batavia.

Batavia police said Christopher C. Dunlap, 30, died while en route to Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

The crash happened around 6:27 p.m. The semitrailer was not occupied at the time of the accident. It was parked facing east near the southeastern corner of the store's customer parking lot. The truck did not belong to Walmart.

Police say Dunlap was driving a Hyundai, and that it went completely under the truck, coming out the other side.

So far, police have only heard from witnesses who heard the crash, but did not see it.

The store is on the southwest corner of Randall Road and Fabyan Parkway.

Dunlap was the only person in the car. Police have not determined if he was shopping at the store because they have not finished examining the car and its contents, but believe that may be the case.

An autopsy is scheduled Friday.

Dunlap was studying to become a physician, attending the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University in Downers Grove, said his father, Lloyd Dunlap. He lived with his father and mother Cindy in Geneva. He had served in the Army, and was attending medical school on an Army scholarship, his father said.

"He was very, very driven, a very dedicated young man a very hard worker, studying. His lifelong dream was to become a doctor," Lloyd Dunlap said.

A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State St., Geneva. Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister, Lindsey.

Police ask that anyone who has information about the crash call Det. Gary LaBarbera at (630) 454-2500.
