Cement truck, two cars crash in Hoffman Estates

A South Elgin man injured in a crash Thursday that shut down Golf Road in Hoffman Estates for more than two hours remained hospitalized late in the day.

The 33-year-old driver's GMC Envoy crossed the center line on westbound Golf about 7:30 a.m. and collided head on with a cement truck, Hoffman Estates police Sgt. Greg Poulos said.

The Envoy then bounced off the cement truck and hit a box truck before coming to a rest on the shoulder, Poulos said.

The driver of the Envoy was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extracted, Poulos said, while police shut down Golf between Barrington and Bartlett roads. He was taken in serious condition to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, Poulos said.

The driver of the cement truck also was taken to St. Alexius, Poulos said, with minor, nonlife threatening injuries. He was later released, Hoffman Estates Fire Chief Robert Gorvett said.

The driver of the third vehicle involved was also hospitalized for observation, Gorvett added.

Crews struggled with removing the cement truck from the roadway, Poulos said. Golf Road was reopened to traffic at about 9:50 a.m.
