Rose looking to overcome quiet side and talk more
One of Derrick Rose's goals during training camp is to get used to the sound of his voice.
In three seasons with the Bulls, Rose has been accommodating to the media, but he fully admits the word talkative does not belong on his social media information page.
After listening to veteran point guard Chauncey Billups chirp constantly during Team USA's trip to the FIBA World Championships in Turkey, Rose decided it's time for him to open up and be heard.
"Today, I was talking just to be saying stuff," Rose said Tuesday at the Berto Center. "Saying (stuff) on defense, yelling. Coach was just looking at me crazy. But I'm just trying to get used to it.
"Knowing I'm one of the guys on the point guard, I'm going to have to be more vocal and talking all the time in practice and in games, so that people can be used to me talking. Talking in meetings, that stuff really helps because I'm not talkative by nature."
Without much prompting, Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau gave Rose some credit for stepping up his leadership at the start of training camp.
"Two years through the league now and his international experience this summer, I think he has a pretty good idea of what he's trying to accomplish," Thibodeau said. "The thing I'm impressed with is his leadership. I thought today he was very vocal. He and Carlos (Boozer) were great leaders, along with Joakim (Noah) and Luol (Deng). Your best players have to help drive the team, and they did that."
Noah OK to shoot: On Monday, Joakim Noah told a story about how head coach Tom Thibodeau tried to be involved in every one of Noah's summer workouts at the Berto Center.
They must have paid off, because Thibodeau says Noah has the green light to shoot his awkward, sideways-spinning jumper.
"If he's open, I want him to shoot. He's proven to me he's more than capable," Thibodeau said. "He's got a good post game. He's got a very good jump-hook game. He's great on the offensive boards. I think the biggest thing is his energy. His ability to sprint the floor for a long period of time, I think we have to take advantage of it."
Rose on the run: Coach Tom Thibodeau on what he'd like to see from Derrick Rose:
"To me, when he rebounds the ball and busts out with it, it's almost impossible to stop him," he said. "When he gets a head of steam and he's coming at your defense, there's not much you can do. The more that he does things like that, I think it's great leadership for our team."
