Lakes nets big win over NSC Prairie rival Antioch
The Lakes boys soccer team seems to be turning the corner.
The rivalry of hosting district rival Antioch on Monday certainly was an incentive.
The Eagles captured a 3-2 victory over the Sequoits in a North Suburban Conference Prairie Division matchup in Lake Villa which had been rescheduled after a weather postponement last Tuesday.
"It was a good win and we needed it," said coach Kevin Kullby, as Lakes improved to 4-7-4, 1-0-1. "The game helps us and keeps us level. It doesn't give us a big head.
"We know just how big the competition can be. If you don't bring you best game, then you can get killed. We've been playing tough recently, and in this game we had to win it for the division and the seed for the sectional."
The Sequoits (11-2-2, 0-1-2) scored the first goal early as Jacob Jost converted an assist from Juan Perez six minutes in.
"We dominated for 15 minutes and got dominated for the other 65 minutes," said Sequoits coach Marni Polakow. "(Lakes) dominated us. We couldn't trap, we couldn't pass and we couldn't win a ball in the air. You can't let them shoot and let them score.
The Eagles poured in 3 unanswered goals.
Bojan Zgonjanin tied the score when he fired home a Tom Langbain pass in the 19th minute.
Mathew Whipple whipped in a header in the 65th minute after Nate McMahon powered a shot off the crossbar.
"I saw the ball go off the bar," said Whipple, who stands 5-feet-6, "I saw the opportunity and went for it. It was my first goal, and it's good coming against our rival team."
The Eagles netted another goal six minutes later on freshman Brian Werchek's one-time volley kick for a 3-1 advantage.
The Sequoits' Oscar Segura got a goal back in the final 36 seconds.
