Mooseheart's 2nd-quarter spurt sinks Christian Liberty
If we could remove the second quarter from Saturday's game between Mooseheart and Christian Liberty we might have a different story.
That cannot be done, though.
Mooseheart scored 34 points in the second quarter on its way to a 41-6 victory over Christian Liberty in Arlington Heights.
The Red Ramblers only ran 11 offensive plays in the quarter while scoring their 5 touchdowns. In the quarter Mooseheart junior Daniel Tucker scored on an interception return and a punt return.
"We've been progressing each week," Mooseheart coach Gary Urwiler said. "Even last week when we played Rockford we felt like we played a really physical, tough game. Unfortunately we weren't able to do some things. We came back this week and said we wanted to get focused and pick up the win."
Mooseheart (2-3, 2-3) spread the ball around its backfield a lot, with Aldrin Vinton, Prince Kollie, Noel Yarngo, and Zach Rice all carrying 6 times or more. None of those players are seniors.
"They all complement each other," Urwiler said. "They're pretty quick. They're pretty gifted. But they are young. We're young. Hopefully we got them out there enough to give them some chances to get out there and get some experience and some success."
Senior Mike Wood was able to get the Chargers on the board on the final play of the third quarter with a 19-yard touchdown run off the right side of the line.
"It was nice to see," Christian Liberty coach Jim Calkins said of the touchdown. "They (the players) got a little fired up. I think they got a little down on themselves in the first half. They thought they were going to do much better."
Yarngo led the way for Mooseheart with 79 rushing yards on 7 carries while Kollie had 52 yards on 9 carries.
Wood had 28 rushing yards for Christian Liberty (0-5, 0-5), which managed just 65 yards of offense, but went the game without being penalized.
"We got some work to do," Calkins said. "Once they (the players) get fired up I can see that they can turn it on. They just got to get fired up early, and fight a little sooner."
