Hear from former Elgin residents on cemetery walk
The Elgin Area Historical Society's 23rd annual Historical Elgin Cemetery Walk will be from noon to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, at Bluff City Cemetery off Bluff City Boulevard, Elgin.
Visitors are escorted through the grounds by costumed guides on an hour walking tour that stops to meet former Elgin residents.
There is a sea captain who made Elgin his home; a female semiprofessional baseball player; a longtime Elgin florist who owned nine greenhouses on Adams; a female teacher/historian who wrote tales of Elgin for a newspaper; a woman who was the first female supervisor at the Elgin National Watch Company; a highly respected Elgin reporter from World War II; and a man who electrified Elgin.
In addition to the standard program, several short presentations have been included in the tour, with information about the cemetery and monuments.
The walk provides an hour of family fun, entertainment and history, without being spooky.
It also gives everyone a chance to view Bluff City Cemetery, a beautiful cemetery laid out in a parklike setting.
Golf carts will be available to provide assistance in getting up the hills.
Tickets may be purchased in advance at the historical society museum, 360 Park St., Elgin, or Ziegler's Ace Hardware on Spring Street.
The cost of the tour is $5 for seniors 65 and older, $3.50 for those ages 18 and younger, $6 for advance sales tickets and $7 the day of the event.
