Hendry not upset about Towers' interest in Maddux

There's a reason new Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers is known around the game as "Tampering Towers."

Upon taking over this week, Towers told USA Today that he'd like to have Greg Maddux in uniform, presumably as a coach.

"I told Greg two years ago as soon as you want to be on the field, please make me the first call," Towers was quoted as saying.

The only problem is Maddux works for Cubs general manager Jim Hendry, and to hear Hendry tell it, that's what Maddux will be doing next season, too.

That aside, Hendry said he wasn't upset with Towers, who has a history of being loose with the lips.

"I just spent the last couple days with Greg and quite a bit of time with him this summer," Hendry said. "Greg and I have a really good relationship.

"Obviously, Greg's intent is to stay with the Cubs for 2011 and do exactly what he's doing now, and I'm sure we'll have some other expansive duties for him. Obviously, I've had numerous conversations with him since Lou (Piniella) left, including the managerial process.

"Kevin and I are friends. I'm glad Kevin is back. It didn't really bother me because I already knew what Greg was going to do.

"I don't blame anybody for wanting Greg Maddux. We're thrilled that Greg is thrilled to be with the Cubs. He and I months ago addressed what he wanted to do next year."

Maddux spent two stints of his Hall of Fame career with the Cubs. He's a special assistant to Hendry. As such, he's helping Hendry with the search for a new manager.

Silva's status: Manager Mike Quade said pitcher Carlos Silva probably is done for the season. Silva, who underwent a procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat in early August, has not pitched since Sept. 7 because of a strained right elbow.

"He hasn't thrown on the side yet," Quade said. "The thought of him getting built up in time for, let's say, the last series, you never rule anything out, but it would be very tough, and I think, from our way of thinking, just make sure we monitor it carefully because to rush somebody back for no apparent reason as opposed to getting them healthy, completely healthy, would not make much sense to me.

"He'll continue his throwing program, and we'll see how he does on the side."

Managerial update: Jim Hendry met with Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg again this week about the managerial opening. The two met in Arizona on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"I had a really nice, good day-and-a-half with Ryno," Hendry said. "We had dinner on Tuesday night and met yesterday for 3-4 hours. It was good. The process is continuing the way I said it would."

Hendry added there is no timetable to present a shortlist of candidates to owner Tom Ricketts.

"I've still got some more people to see," Hendry said. "I'll hopefully work on that the next couple of weeks and regroup."
