Tell us how to vote on library plan

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, the Geneva Public Library will hold a public hearing on the purchase of land for a new library location. The land is the "Cetron" property north of Route 38 on what would be 7th Street. The intent of this purchase would be to move from the existing historic library location to a new location and sell the current library location.

If you have an opinion, either for or against, on this issue, this meeting is probably your best opportunity to voice that opinion before the purchase is finalized. I would strongly encourage you to attend the meeting so the board knows your feelings on this important decision.

You may also be aware that I was the lone vote "no" on the initial decision to purchase this site. I did this for two reasons: I do not believe the board negotiated the price adequately, and I do not believe the board has adequately explored the potential of staying in our current historic location.

I think more investigation is warranted before the conclusion should be to move. I'm in favor of forming a focus group of concerned citizens to discuss this beyond the confines of the board.

I am more than happy to discuss my reasoning behind my vote, and always like to hear from interested individuals. I believe that democracy is best served by an active debate among interested individuals. No matter which way your opinion falls, feel free to e-mail me back or, better yet, come to the meeting.
