Channel 7 to hold Senate, gov. debates

ABC 7 will hold debates next month between the major candidates for Illinois governor and U.S. Senate.

ABC chief political correspondent and "Good Morning America" host George Stephanopoulos will be the moderator for the Senate debate on Oct. 19. Daily Herald political reporter Kerry Lester will question the candidates along with fellow panelists Charles Thomas, Channel 7 political editor, and Andy Shaw, executive director of the Better Government Association.

Channel 7 anchor Ron Magers will be the moderator of the governor debate on Oct. 20, again with Thomas and Shaw, along with a third panelist to be named.

The debates will take place at 7 p.m. at the station's studios at 190 N. State St., Chicago, and run live on WLS' auxiliary digital Channel 7.2 and stream on its abc7chicago.com website. They'll then air on tape after the station's late newscast at 10:35 p.m. on ABC 7.

The League of Women Voters and the Illinois Broadcasters Association are co-sponsoring the debates.
