Bensenville fire contained to one apartment
Firefighters were relieved after a Tuesday afternoon Bensenville apartment fire was contained to one unit in the 150 unit building.
Bensenville firefighters responded to a fire alarm coming from the six-story apartment complex on the 100 block of East George Street and found smoke pouring out of a single unit on the third floor, officials said.
The unit where the fire started was severely damaged, while two neighboring units received smoke and water damage, officials said.
A fire department spokesman credited the building's masonry construction, which is designed to prevent fires from spreading from one unit to another.
Members of the Red Cross were on the scene to help the three families whose apartments were damaged in the fire find places to stay, fire officials said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
