South Elgin homecoming unaffected by vandalism
Homecoming activities will not be affected by a recent spate of vandalism at South Elgin High School, school officials said Tuesday morning.
Sunday night, police and school staff discovered graffiti on the sides of the building, the sidewalk and vehicles parked in the lot. Toilet paper and chalk was also strewed around the high school, located at 760 E. Main St.
Police do not believe the graffiti was gang related and estimated the damage at $7,000 to $8,000. The building has been fully cleaned up, according to school officials.
South Elgin police Sgt. Mike Doty said police are unsure if the damage was related to this week's homecoming activities at the high school.
But school officials said Saturday's varsity game, parade and dance, as well as spirit activities throughout the week, will not be affected by the incident. "They're all moving forward," said Tony Sanders, spokesman for Elgin Area School District U-46.
The building was probably vandalized Saturday night into Sunday morning, according to police.
