Scouting Genoa-Kingston at Hampshire

Genoa-Kingston (3-0) at Hampshire (0-3)

When: 7 p.m. Friday at Hampshire Athletic Field

Last meeting: 2008, Genoa-Kingston 38, Hampshire 34 (first round playoff game)

Last week: Stillman Valley 49, Hampshire 7; Genoa-Kingston 28, Burlington Central 24

Outlook: Genoa-Kingston has won the last two meetings between these schools. Prior to that, Hampshire had won 10 straight in the series. The Whip-Purs ran into a buzz saw at powerful Stillman Valley last week. They return home to face a Genoa-Kingston squad that rallied for a late touchdown last week to beat Burlington Central. Quarterback Craig Billington's zigzagging 28-yard scramble with under four minutes to play was the difference. "Offensively, Billingham is scary," Hampshire coach Dan Cavanaugh said. "He's a quick little runner and can do a lot of things to hurt you." The Whip-Purs will take the field without starting quarterback Bryan Roberts, who left the game last week and will remain sidelined with "a stiff neck." Junior Chase Lundry will step in at quarterback. Roberts and Lundry each took a lot of snaps over the summer and in early season practices. Fullback Lorenzo Brandon remains sidelined with a shoulder injury. Cavanaugh said he has seen improvement in this team overall, though it was tough to notice against a top-tier opponent like Stillman Valley. "Offensively, we're getting better and better," he said. "Stillman Valley was so good on both sides of the ball, but we really moved it well against St. Edward and DeKalb. We hope to keep seeing that kind of production, but we can't shoot ourselves in the foot like we did in those games."
