Elgin man charged with attempted murder

A 38-year-old Elgin man was charged Monday with attempted murder after he stabbed a man in the chest because he suspected the victim was in a relationship with his wife, police said.

Pablo Gomez, of the 600 block of Jefferson St., was being held in Kane County jail on $200,000 bail on charges of attempted murder, home invasion, aggravated battery and criminal trespass to residence.

Elgin police spokeswoman Sue Olafson said at about 10 p.m. Monday, Gomez and his niece went to the victim's home on the 1100 block of Sherwood Avenue in Elgin to confront the victim - identified in court documents as Johny Ortiz-Mendez - and Gomez's common law wife.

After the niece broke in through a sliding-glass door, Gomez confronted Ortiz-Mendez, 30, and stabbed him in the right side of the chest, police said.

Ortiz was transported to Sherman Hospital in Elgin.

Gomez, who must pay $20,000 to be released from custody, is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 23 at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles.
