Joey & Rory keep it simple and sweet on CD

As the title "Album Number Two" suggests, country music duo Joey & Rory tend to keep their sentiments simple and straightforward. But what makes the married couple's music so charming is how they deliver their plainspoken songs with such genuineness and, when appropriate, sly wit.

The album title draws on that sense of humor: It's taken from a tongue-in-cheek song about the pressures of following up on a successful debut album. That comic touch surfaces repeatedly in songs that include a come-on ("All You Need Is Me"), a put-down ("Baby I'll Come Back to You") and a catalog of bad behavior ("You Ain't Right").

However, the funny songs are only the gravy on the duo's meatiest strength, which is pulling heartstrings with sweetly stated truths set to acoustic-based arrangements recalling the front-porch sounds of the Judds. With Rory Lee Feek providing the songs, and his wife, Joey Martin Feek, taking lead vocals on 11 of the 12 songs, the duo tap into a heartfelt, heartland style that addresses family, faith and honest work with earnest flair.
