Freight train cars derail near Yorkville

Cleanup continued into the day Tuesday after several freight train cars jumped the track on the Illinois Rail Net railway line near Yorkville earlier in the day, officials said.

The derailment took place near Illinois Highway 47 shortly after midnight, Deputy Chief Dave Delaney of the Yorkville Police Department said.

Delaney said three cars spilled their contents in the derailment. However, he said the cars were only carrying white sand and not hazardous materials.

He said there were no injuries in the derailment, and railway officials are still trying to determine the cause.

No roads have been blocked by the derailment, he said.

The Bristol-Kendall Fire Department chief said heavy equipment was brought in by the rail company about 1 p.m. to right the cars.
