Garage sale to help Elgin police caninesElgin's Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association is holding a rummage sale to raise equipment money for the Elgin Police Department's three police dogs - Gage, Deutsch and Keiser. The sale runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at the Valley Creek Subdivision, 2065 Belvidere Line Drive. Items for sale include toys, clothes, books antiques and furniture. The three dogs will be in attendance as well. For details, call (847) 289-2588.Keep the Fox River cleanAlgonquin, in conjunction with the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, is organizing its third annual "It's Our River Day," from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at Cornish Park. You're invited to celebrate and clean up the Fox River. The clean up begins at 2:15 p.m., following remarks from Algonquin Trustee Debby Sosine and Gary Swick from Friends of the Fox River. As well, a kayaker will demonstrate kayaking on the river. The event starts with a 5K run at 9 a.m. and a kids' one-mile challenge at 10 a.m. A health fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. will feature flu and pneumonia shots, a blood donation center, a mobile dentist, karate mini classes and massages.
