Labor Day enforcement brings six DUI arrests in Lombard
Lombard police made six DUI arrests during a Labor Day weekend roadside safety check and 17 days of extra traffic enforcement.
One DUI arrest resulted from the roadside safety check, and officers arrested five other impaired drivers between Aug. 20 and Sept. 5 in a holiday enforcement effort funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation's Traffic Safety Division.
Officers at the safety checkpoint pulled about every fourth vehicle off North Avenue into the parking lot of the Schweppe Inc. kitchen supply store at 376 W. North Ave., in Lombard from 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, to 2:15 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, said officer Joe Grage of the traffic safety unit.
"Weekends are kind of a hot spot during the week for impaired drivers because people don't tend to go out in the middle of the week," Grage said.
Police stopped 158 cars at the roadside check, compared to 146 vehicles stopped last Labor Day weekend.
Lombard police made one drug-related arrest; eight arrests for driving without a license or with a suspended or revoked license; and six arrests for driving without insurance at this year's safety check. Officers also issued one moving violation for open alcohol in a vehicle, Grage said.
In addition to the five DUI arrests, the increased traffic enforcement period yielded 11 arrests for driving without a license or with a suspended or revoked license and 38 traffic citations, according to Lombard police.
Lombard police received about $4,000 for the safety checkpoint and increased patrols and was one of 276 agencies statewide to participate in extra Labor Day DUI and seat belt enforcement.
