Construction begins at Naperville's Centennial Beach
Just as summer comes to a close, a renovation of Naperville's Centennial Beach is likewise underway. The project will bring improvements to the bathhouse, front entry and concessions area.
The work, stared this week, involves a combination of new structures and renovation. But it's the infrastructure that "sorely" needs help, according to senior project manager Aaron Chmiel of Berglund Construction. That part of the project includes new septic lines, water main pipes and the underground placement of electrical lines.
The bathhouse will get an addition, a new concessions stand with an expanded food menu will be built as well as an platform lift to help get the handicapped to the beach.
A major part of the work will be landscaping, which will include a new front entry plaza, a new driveway for a safer patron drop-off area and new walkways. Shade trees, evergreens, flowering trees as well as shrubs and perennials also will be planted. Trees between the bathhouse and the parking lot had to be removed, but officials hope to recycle the wood from these trees for furniture for the beach.
The project - expected to be completed in time for the season opening next Memorial Day - is the result of many years of planning, public input and preparation, including permitting with the city of Naperville, DuPage County and the state.
One of the top priorities was preservation of the historic beach house and the unique character of the beach.
"We worked with beach patrons, area residents, staff and the project architects to create a plan that will preserve the historic structure of the bathhouse while addressing the other priorities of the project, which are improving safety and accessibility," said Director of Planning Eric Shutes.
