Cougars shut out in Midwest League playoffs

The Kane County Cougars opened the Midwest League playoffs Wednesday night but suffered a 4-0 loss in Game 1 against the Quad Cities River Bandits at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars' Murphy Smith pitched 6 innings of 1-run ball, but the offense mustered just 3 hits, and the team fell in its eighth straight playoff defeat. The Cougars now face a must-win situation in Game 2 tonight at 7 p.m.

Smith gave up a fourth-inning run when he allowed a one-out single to Colin Walsh and uncorked a pair of wild pitches to put Walsh at third. Then Devin Goodwin singled to right to make it 1-0. Smith gave up 4 hits, walked none and struck out six.

The Cougars were stymied for 7 innings by Bandits starter Shelby Miller, who gave up 2 hits, walked one and struck out 13.

Jonathan Joseph (2-5, 3.33) will pitch for the Cougars tonight.
