NIU enrollment falls slightly, applications up

DEKALB -- Enrollment has dropped slightly at Northern Illinois University.

University officials say total enrollment this fall is 23,850. That's nearly 600 students fewer than the 24,424 enrolled last fall.

The Daily Chronicle newspaper in DeKalb reports that there are nearly 5,488 new students enrolled this fall, nearly 300 more than the school's goal of 5,200 new students.

NIU said it saw a 12 percent increase in the number of applications.

The university reports transfer student enrollment increased 9.2 percent. NIU provost Raymond Alden says that shows students are postponing enrolling at NIU "due to financial concerns." He says more Illinois high school graduates are choosing to go to community colleges.
