Gurnee man killed in ATV accident

A Gurnee man was killed after he lost control of the all-terrain vehicle he was driving and he was thrown into a utility pole, police said Wednesday.

Terry E. Matthews, 30, of the 3000 block of Grandmore Avenue, died of multiple injuries suffered in the accident. Autopsy results showed his blood-alcohol level was at .166 percent, roughly twice the legal limit, said Lake County Coroner Richard Keller.

Matthews wasn't breathing when police arrived at the intersection of Magnolia and Pacific avenues at 2:01 p.m. Tuesday, Gurnee police Cmdr. Jay Patrick said in a news release.

Patrick said the first officer on the scene saw another man performing CPR on Matthews. Patrick said the officer used an automatic external defibrillator to administer a shock to the victim to regain a pulse.

Matthews, the sole rider of the ATV, was taken to Vista Medical Center-East in Waukegan by Gurnee paramedics, Patrick said. Matthews had suffered significant internal injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 3:12 p.m., he said.

Witnesses told police the ATV was traveling south on the west side of Magnolia when Matthews appeared to lose control, Patrick said. The ATV flipped and Matthews was thrown from it and struck the pole, Patrick said.

No one else was injured and no other property was damaged, officials said.
