Man accused of racially motivated Red Box shooting

MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee man is accused of shooting a woman with a pellet gun at a Red Box movie dispenser because of her race.

A criminal complaint says 35-year-old Robert Malczewski told investigators he was shooting possums but because mosquitoes were so bad he moved to his room and started shooting at "Mexicans." He later denied shooting at people.

A woman standing at the rental box July 25 had to have a pellet surgically removed from her neck. Police say they also saw Malczewski shoot out his nearby apartment window at the same dispenser two weeks later, but didn't hit anyone.

Malczewski is in custody on $30,000 bond. He was charged Saturday with disorderly conduct and second-degree recklessly endangering safety, as a hate crime. His attorney Deborah Vishny had no comment.
