Scouting Chicago Academy at Aurora Christian
Chicago Academy (0-1) at Aurora Christian (1-0)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. today
Last year: Did not play.
Last week: Galesburg 57, Chicago Academy 0; Aurora Christian 48, DuSable 14.
Outlook: Given the scores listed above Aurora Christian coach Don Beebe suspects this game will deliver "probably along the lines of what we just played. I firmly believe DuSable was way better than they were last year, they actually did some things." Like intercept the first pass quarterback Anthony Maddie threw in an Eagles uniform and hold Aurora Christian to a reported 2 first-quarter yards. "I thought we started very slowly but that's normal, I guess, for the first game of the year," Beebe said. "The kids were more nervous than I thought they would be." Settling in, Maddie threw for 5 touchdowns all in the second quarter. Production by receivers Grayson Roberts, Chad Beebe (Don's sophomore son), Brandon Mayes and Andrew Casara - who scored on a punt return and a catch and nearly ran back an interception - may also be expected against Chicago Academy, which goes with four down linemen defensively and runs the spread on offense. Defensively, the Eagles landed another interception by Kenny McCracken and strong safety Mitch Holtz "seemed to be everywhere," the coach said. The thrust is improving tackling and offensive efficiency and to get a ground game going behind linemen David Anderson, Jon Mangan, Dean Parr, Todd Clapp and Sam Miller. Last week's running clock reduced offensive continuity in the second half. "We'll see this week how that improves," Beebe said.
Next week: Collins (1-0) at Chicago Academy, Sept. 11; Marian Central (1-0) at Aurora Christian, Sept. 10.
