Jackson saves day, bullpen
CLEVELAND - Manny Ramirez didn't make his debut Tuesday night, but give him some credit for the White Sox' 4-3 victory over the Indians at Progressive Field.
"I told (Ramirez), 'I finally got some protection,' " A.J. Pierzynski said. "He got a standing ovation just for going out on deck, which is awesome."
With the game tied at 1-1 in the ninth inning, Alex Rios drew a leadoff walk and stole second. After Paul Konerko struck out, Carlos Quentin also walked.
That brought Pierzynski to the plate to face Cleveland reliever Frank Herrmann, and Ramirez came out to the on-deck circle to pinch hit for Brent Lillibridge.
On an 0-1 pitch, Pierzynski got a hanging slider and drilled it into the right-field seats.
"I'm not going to say A.J. hit a home run because of Manny," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "It's unpredictable. But when you see Manny's presence, when he's going to hit in front of Manny, he's going to look at better pitches."
Sox starter Edwin Jackson threw 129 pitches over 82/3 innings and most were quality. But the right-hander hit the wall in the ninth, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits before Bobby Jenks came on and nailed down another narrow victory.
With the White Sox' bullpen beaten up and tired out, Jackson's effort was well received.
"As a starter you want to go as far as you can anyways, no matter if the bullpen is fresh or if they're beat up," Jackson said. "You want to be on the field as long as you can or until you can't go any longer. That's just the mind-set I've taken out there."
Beckham sits: Gordon Beckham didn't play against the Indians on Tuesday night, and the second baseman is unlikely to play until Friday, when the White Sox open a three-game series at Boston.
Monday night, Cleveland reliever Frank Herrmann hit Beckham with a pitch on the right hand.
Roster moves: Rosters can expand today, and the White Sox plan on bringing up three players - Class AAA Charlotte catcher Tyler Flowers and outfielder Alejandro De Aza and Class AA Birmingham relief pitcher Gregory Infante.
Pitcher Carlos Torres, who was optioned to Charlotte on Tuesday to clear a roster spot for Manny Ramirez, is expected back later in September, as is infielder Dayan Viciedo.
Arizona bound: The White Sox are sending seven players to the Arizona Fall League, headed by outfielder Jared Mitchell.
Mitchell, the Sox' top prospect, tore a tendon in his left ankle during spring training and had season-ending surgery.
The other six prospects headed to the Peoria Saguaros are all playing for Class AA Birmingham - pitchers Anthony Carter, Charlie Leesman, Johnnie Lowe and Henry Mabee, catcher Josh Phegley and shortstop Eduardo Escobar.
Carter is having the best season; he leads the Southern League with 22 saves.
