Elgin home invasion suspect pleads guilty

A South Elgin man pleaded guilty Wednesday to his role in a January home invasion and burglary.

Troy E. Bradford, 20, of the 100 block of South Center Street, pleaded guilty to one count of residential burglary and was sentenced to four years in prison, according to the terms of a plea agreement.

Bradford was one of three people charged in connection with a Jan. 5 home invasion at an apartment building on the 200 block of Walnut Street in Elgin.

Kane County Assistant State's Attorney Tom St. Jules said Bradford knocked on an apartment door about 11:30 p.m. and punched a man who answered in the face. The group then continued to beat the victim, knocking out one of his teeth, and stole money from his home, according to police.

On Wednesday, Associate Judge Allen M. Anderson said Bradford "screwed up," and told him to consider changing his ways. "This is not the way to go," Anderson said.

Co-defendants Marc O. Duncan, 18, of the 500 block of West Highland Avenue, Elgin, and Alexis L. Monton, 18, of the 0-100 block of Crystal Street, Elgin, each pleaded guilty in July to one count of residential burglary and were sentenced to four years and eight years in prison, respectively, according to court records.

By law, Bradford must serve at least half of his sentence. He was given credit for 277 days served in the county jail.
