Scouting Fremd at Lake Zurich

Fremd (11-1) at Lake Zurich (9-4)

When: 7:30 p.m. today at Mel Eide Field

Last year's opener: Fremd d. Lake Zurich 10-7

Outlook: What Fremd coach Mike Donatucci called one of the toughest early-season schedules in his tenure has a difficult start against a Lake Zurich team that just missed making it to Champaign with a last-second 21-17 7A semifinal loss to Glenbard West. Standout RB Jacob Brinlee (1,683 yards, 26 TDs) returns along with backs Mike Shield and Jon Mularz behind a line with four returning starters. "That kid (Brinlee) is so fast," Donatucci said. "They were in the shotgun last year (opener) and switched to the wing-T. This team is a little more like 2007 with the three-pronged attack." Shield at LB is one of seven starters back on a defense that allowed 14.7 points a game.
