Your news: Local Boy Scouts trek through New Mexico wilderness

A crew of 12 Boy Scouts and adult leaders from Troop 34 in Arlington Heights went on an 11-day summer trek through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico at Philmont Scout Ranch from July 26 to Aug. 5.

The crew carried everything they needed to survive during the trek on their backs while hiking from camp to camp. The scouts participated in backcountry activities at different camps including shooting, burro racing, homesteading and horseback riding. The trek included a conservation project where the scouts learned and participated in the upkeep of the local ecosystem. Along the trek, the crew endured tough challenges including being in bear and mountain lion territory, steep climbs, and often inclement weather. They hiked a total of 84 miles.
