Villa Park man gets 70 years for Naperville shooting

A Villa Park man was sentenced to 70 years in prison for a 2008 armed robbery that left a Naperville man dead.

Tyrell Jackson, 22, was found guilty of first-degree murder in May and was sentenced Thursday by Will County Circuit Judge Richard Schoenstedt.

Prosecutors said Jackson was one of two armed men who in April 2008 forced their way into the townhouse of John D. Rosales, 23, on Naperville's southwest side. The men conspired to steal cocaine, marijuana and money from the residence at 2511 Sheehan Drive, prosecutors said.

Jackson's accomplice, Reginald Chandler-Martin, 23, of Aurora, ordered everyone in the home to get down. When Rosales refused to comply, Jackson shot him in the neck, prosecutors said.

Chandler-Martin was convicted by a jury in July on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of home invasion. He is the last of five defendants awaiting sentencing; he faces 20 to 75 years in prison.

Two other men, Cherrod Moore, 30, and Courtney L. Mayes, 23, both of Aurora, were playing video games with Rosales when the violence erupted. They initially claimed to be innocent bystanders, but police said they later incriminated themselves. Both are serving 20-year prison terms.

Rosales fled the house shortly after being wounded and drove north. His car crashed into a concrete median at 87th Street and Rosales stumbled from his vehicle for about 200 feet before collapsing in a grassy portion of the median, where two other friends who weren't behind the botched robbery tried to help him.

A fifth man, Justin C. Harper, 22, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and cooperated with the prosecution. He was sentenced to five years in prison. Harper provided the guns that were used in the crime.

Assistant State's Attorney Steve Platek prosecuted all the defendants in the Naperville shooting.
