Seniors, disabled can apply for heating help

The temperatures in Illinois may be hovering in the 70s and 80s but state officials say it's time to start applying for winter heating assistance.

Gov. Pat Quinn on Thursday announced the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program would begin accepting applications Sept. 1 from seniors and those with disabilities. The state and federally funded program also is available for low-income families.

Statewide a network of 35 local agencies administer the program's grants. Those with children under age five can start applications on Oct. 1. Those not eligible for priority enrollment can apply Nov. 1.
