Woman killed in Des Plaines crash

A 77-year-old woman died and an 84-year-old woman suffered head injuries after a Hyundai hit a traffic signal pole in Des Plaines Wednesday, police said.

Police responded to a one-car accident at the intersection of Algonquin Road and Kolpin Drive at 4:44 p.m. Police determined a 1994 Hyundai Scoupe was traveling east on Algonquin when it left the road and hit a pole on the southeast corner.

June Grenko, a passenger, was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights after the crash, where she was pronounced dead at around 5:35 p.m, officials from the Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed.

The unidentified 84-year-old driver was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital for head injuries, police said. Algonquin Road was blocked from Elmhurst to Mount Prospect roads after the crash. Police are investigating.
