Dist. 62 seeks volunteer tutors
Des Plaines Elementary District 62 is seeking volunteers to become intergenerational OASIS reading tutors. OASIS is a nonprofit, national organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for mature adults through programs in the arts, humanities, wellness, and volunteer service.
District 62 needs volunteers 50 years and older who can spend one hour each week during the school day to tutor. Volunteers will work one-on-one with a young child struggling to learn to read. Tutors and children read, talk, write stories, and play games together, at Central, Orchard Place, Plainfield, or South schools.
Training, materials and ongoing support are provided by the district. Assignments are based on school preference and availability. No experience necessary.
Volunteer training is scheduled from 1-3 p.m. Sept. 15, and noon-3 p.m., Sept. 16 at the Prairie Lakes Community Center, 515 E. Thacker, Des Plaines.
Lunch will be provided on Sept. 16.
To register, email Mindy Ward, director of community relations, at wardm@d62.org or call (847) 824-8070 by Sept. 10.
