Gun-wielding Park City man shot by police
A 37-year-old man remains hospitalized after being shot by police outside his Park City home, police officials said.
The man was shot twice by police officers after threatening family members and police with a rifle outside of his home in the 3900 block of Lowe Street Saturday morning, said Park City Police Chief Walter Holderbau.
Holderbau said police were called to the Lowe Street address after reports that a man was holding family members hostage inside the home.
Upon arrival, officers saw the man on the front porch of the home holding a woman hostage and wielding a rifle, Holderbau said.
Officers told the man to drop the weapon and let the woman go, but he refused and instead to kill the officers, Holderbau said.
"During this time, the woman was wrestling with (the man) and pushing the rifle away," Holderbau said. "Instead of dropping the weapon as he was told to do, (the man) told the officers he was going to kill them, then turned the rifle in their direction."
Holderbau said two officers shot at the man, hitting him twice. He was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he is still being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Holderbau said.
Park City police were assisted at the scene by officers from Waukegan and the Lake County sheriff's office. The incident remains under investigation by the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force and officials from the Lake County State's Attorney's Office.
Charges against the man are pending, Holderbau said.
