Ex-Mooseheart student gets jail, probation for molestations
A former Mooseheart student who molested two young girls was spared prison Friday, in part due to the compassion of the victims' family, prosecutors said.
Abraham Mazon, 18, of Chicago, pleaded guilty in Kane County Circuit Court to two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in exchange for 90 days in the county jail and three years of sex offender probation.
Assistant State's Attorney Deb Bree said prosecutors considered Mazon's age and the wishes of the victims' family in negotiating the plea.
"They showed a great deal of compassion for this man, that he will be able to rehabilitate himself and lead a productive life," she said.
By pleading guilty, Mazon admitted to fondling two girls, then ages 5 and 7, who were the children of his house parents at Mooseheart Child City & School near Batavia.
Bree said the abuse occurred between Jan. 29 and Aug. 11, 2009, in a dormitory-style home that Mazon, then 17, shared with the victims and their parents.
Judge Thomas E. Mueller said Mazon has already served 75 days of his jail sentence.
For sex offender probation, he must register as a sex offender, receive counseling, avoid contact with the victims, and have no unsupervised contact with minors.
Mazon, who had faced up to seven years in prison, did not make a statement in court Friday.
