Arlington Hts. police arrest suspect in attempted robbery
A tip received by Arlington Heights Crime Stoppers led police to a man they say tried to hold up a currency exchange Aug. 1.
Steven Gregory Carter, 46, of the 4200 block of Lawrence Avenue in Chicago, was charged Friday with attempted aggravated robbery, and is expected in bond court at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Police said Carter approached a woman as she was getting ready to open the Algonquin-Wilke Currency Exchange, 1764 W. Algonquin Road, for the day. Police say he shoved her into the door, grabbed her hair and hit her around the head and shoulders, demanding she open the interior door with her keys, and threatening to shoot her.
Police say the woman managed to open the door just enough to slip through, then closed and it behind her and ran out the rear door to a nearby gas station.
Based on her report, police released information to the public, including a description of the offender. On Thursday, Aug. 19, a tip came into the Crime Stoppers Tip Line that gave investigators enough information for them to locate a suspect.
Once he was brought in for questioning, police said, Carter made a full confession of the attempted robbery, and the victim also made a positive identification.
