New boss for Navy recruits:Rear Admiral David Steindl became the new boss of recruits at Great Lakes Naval Station in a ceremony Thursday. Steindl took over for Rear Admiral Clifford S. Sharpe as commander of Naval Service Training Command. Steindl comes to Great Lakes Recruit Training Command from his most recent assignment as the Navy's director of the surface officer distribution division in Washington, D.C. Steindl hails from Stillwater, Okla., and received his commission from the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating with distinction in 1984 with a bachelor of science degree in economics. Great Lakes has the Navy's only boot camp.Bike ride fundraiser:The Lake County Juvenile Officer's Association presents Wheels Go Round, a fundraiser bike ride to benefit the Zacharias Sexual Abuse Center and The Lake County Children's Advocacy Center. The event is Saturday, Aug. 21, with rides beginning at 10 a.m. Riders can choose from 5-, 10- or 50-mile routes, all starting and finishing at Pavilion C of the Old School Forest Preserve, 28201 N. St. Mary's Road, Libertyville. Riders must take the path by 11 a.m. Rest stops will be set up along the route, and a picnic will follow the ride. Register on site on the day of the event starting at 7 a.m. or online at wheelsgo.org. Cost is $50 a family, $30 for adults. For more info visit wheelsgo.org or call (847) 833-5941.26th AfroFest:The largest event sponsored by African Americans in Lake County is 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21 at the Greenbelt Forest Preserve in North Chicago. The annual event features performances of more than 50 bands, choirs, and groups. Three stages of entertainment, including DJ Phantom of WGCI radio, are featured. Pony rides, a car show and other surprises, as well as a wealth of ethnic dishes will be offered. Information regarding the health disparities in the minority community, "Kid Care" program and job training opportunities also will be available. Greenbelt is on Green Bay Road, south of Route 120 in North Chicago.
