Round Lake Beach mom convicted in death of newborn daughter

A Round Lake Beach woman accepted responsibility Wednesday for the death of her newborn daughter more than three years ago

Nericia Davis, 23, will face up to 14 years in prison but will also be eligible for probation when she is sentenced for involuntary manslaughter.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Ari Fisz said Davis was home alone on the night of March 25, 2007 and was a little more than six months pregnant at the time. After experiencing some discomfort, Davis went to the bathroom and delivered the infant girl into the toilet, Fisz said.

She cut the umbilical cord, then laid on the floor of the bathroom for about two hours before her mother came home and called paramedics.

An autopsy determined the baby had been born alive and had died of hypothermia, Fisz said.

During a hearing before Circuit Judge Fred Foreman, Davis did not change her not guilty plea but conceded there was enough evidence for her to be found guilty.

Foreman convicted her of the crime and ordered her to return to court Oct. 8 for scheduling of a sentencing hearing.
