Bush handles Cards
Dave Bush pitched 6 stingy innings to bounce back from a start in which allowed 4 consecutive home runs, and Casey McGehee hit a 2-run homer in visiting Milwaukee's 3-2 victory over suddenly sliding St. Louis on Tuesday night.
Albert Pujols homered for the eighth time in 14 games, leading off the fourth with his 31st of the season and 397th of his career. The Cardinals managed only 3 more singles against Bush (6-10) and have lost three in a row to NL Central also-rans, including a pair of losses to the Cubs.
St. Louis is 10-5 against the division-leading Reds, but 15-17 against the Brewers, Cubs and Astros.
Yankees 6, Tigers 2: CC Sabathia (16-5) was dominant at home again and Nick Swisher had a 2-run single, leading New York past Detroit Tigers.
Curtis Granderson homered against his former team, and Robinson Cano connected from the cleanup spot for New York.
Cano moved up a spot in the order because Alex Rodriguez sat out after experiencing soreness in his left calf and leaving the Yankees' loss to Detroit on Monday. An MRI on Tuesday revealed a low-grade strain; he is day to day.
Brett Gardner had 2 hits, scored twice and stole a base from the leadoff spot a night after making an aggressive slide into second base in an attempt to break up a game-ending double play.
Sabathia (16-5) became the AL's first 16-game winner and improved to 14-0 in his last 19 regular-season starts at home, a streak that began with 7 scoreless innings against his opponent Tuesday, Justin Verlander (13-8), on July 18, 2009.
Rays 10, Rangers 1: Matt Garza scattered 5 hits over 7 scoreless innings for host Tampa Bay to get his first win since pitching a no-hitter late last month.
Garza (12-7) went 0-2 in 3 starts after throwing Tampa Bay's first no-hitter in a 5-0 victory over Detroit on July 26. The right-hander, who had 10 strikeouts and 2 walks, struck out AL batting leader Josh Hamilton with runners on second and third to end the third.
Evan Longoria came within a homer of the cycle and had 3 RBI for the Rays, who have won the first two games of the three-game series in a potential playoff matchup. The victory gave Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon his 400th career win.
