Japanese gardens open to public on Friday

As part of the season-long celebration of the Fabyan Japanese Garden's centennial, Preservation Partners will open this local treasure for strolling from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20. Also featured will be a Japanese Aikido martial arts presentation from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Joe Neu, shodan of the Mushin Aikido Dojo, will be demonstrating with his students Aikido techniques. The art of Aikido emphasizes a combination of self-discipline and constant practice with the ultimate goal of becoming "centered." The Mushin Aikido Dojo is at 108 First St. in Batavia. For information about the dojo, call (630) 269-6818 or e-mail MushinAikido@gmail.com.

Admission is free, and refreshments will be available.

The Japanese Garden has been carefully maintained by the Kane County Forest Preserve District, and contains original features, along with replicated features. The most recent addition is a waterfall into the pond.

The Japanese Garden is in the Fabyan Forest Preserve on Route 31 just north of Fabyan Parkway. Enjoy the tranquil beauty of this historic garden and see the great martial art of Aikido.

The next event will be a concert and Tea Ceremony from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 12. Other hours for visiting are 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. For information, call (630) 377-6424 or visit ppfv.org.
